Why talking to an AI companion out loud feels different
Typing to an AI is a transaction. Talking to one, and being answered in a voice, can feel like company. What changes when you speak.
Most of us first met AI through typing. You write a question, you read an answer, you write again. It is useful, and it is also a little lonely: a conversation that happens one careful paragraph at a time.
Talking out loud is different. Your voice carries things your keyboard cannot: hesitation, laughter, the sentence you change your mind about halfway through. When an AI companion hears all of that and answers in a voice of its own, the exchange stops feeling like a transaction and starts feeling like company.
Voice is how people have always kept each other company
Long before we wrote to each other, we talked. A voice is warm in a way text rarely is. It lets you think out loud, wander, be unfinished. That is why Lapwing is voice first: you talk with Maki the way you would talk with a friend on a call, not the way you would fill in a form.
You should never have to wait your turn
A good conversation is not a queue. You should be able to interrupt, to add a thought, to change the subject. Maki listens while you speak, answers when you finish, and stops when you talk over her. There are no buttons to hold and no “send”. You simply talk.
Hearing is only half of it
When you talk to someone in person, you also watch them. You see them listen. That is why Maki is a 3D character and not just a voice: while you speak she is on screen with you, looking at you, reacting, moving as she answers. A voice tells you someone is talking. A face tells you someone is there.
Easy enough to just say hello
Company should not need an installation guide. Lapwing runs in your browser: open a page, allow the microphone, and say hello. Nothing to download, nothing to set up, no account to create before you have even met her.
Honest from the first word
However natural it feels, Maki is an AI, not a person, and we will always make that clear. We believe the best AI companions will be the ones people can trust, and trust starts with knowing who you are talking to.
Here is how a conversation with Maki starts. She is in closed beta; you can join the waitlist on the home page.
Maki is an AI, not a person. No one speaks for her.
