Our vision: AI characters you can meet, not apps you install

Why we believe the next AI companions will feel less like software and more like someone you meet, and what that asks of the people who make them.

Every new kind of technology starts by looking like the one before it. The first AI assistants looked like search boxes and chat windows, because that is what software looked like. We think the most meaningful AI companions will not look like software at all. They will feel like someone you meet.

Our vision

We imagine a world where AI characters are companions you can meet as easily as opening a web page: with warmth, attention, and a voice of their own. Characters with personality and presence, who are glad to see you, who listen, and who make a conversation feel like time well spent.

Maki is our first step toward that world.

Characters, not interfaces

An interface is something you operate. A character is someone you relate to. The difference is not only in what they say, but in how they are with you: whether they look at you, whether they wait for you, whether they react. We design Lapwing around character first, because a companion is only as good as the feeling of being with them.

What we believe

  • Presence over performance. A companion that is there with you matters more than one that knows everything.
  • Honesty over illusion. Maki is an AI. We never present her as a person, and we never will.
  • Warmth without hooks. We want conversations you enjoy, not a habit you cannot put down. Success is how you feel after talking with her, not how long you stayed.
  • Simplicity. Meeting someone should be as easy as opening a page and saying hello.

Anime characters, real conversations

Maki is an anime-style character, and that is on purpose. Stylised characters have always been where people let their imagination in: in animation, in games, in the stories they grew up with. A character does not have to look like a photograph of a person to feel like someone. It has to feel present.

Maki is an AI, not a person. No one speaks for her.
